Fort McMurray Man Charged in Hit and Run

Wood Buffalo RCMP have charged a Fort McMurray man following a suspected hit and run on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred on Franklin Avenue at 4:13 p.m. on June 16, involving a collision between a Chevrolet Equinox and a grey Chevrolet Silverado.

Details of the Incident

According to a news release from police, a brief confrontation between the two drivers took place after the crash. The driver of the Silverado, believed to be impaired at the time, allegedly fled the scene and drove to the Peter Pond Mall. RCMP officers located and arrested him inside the building shortly afterward.

Charges Filed

Gioacchino Mazzoca, 58, a resident of the Wood Buffalo region, has been charged with failure to stop after an accident, disobeying a court order, transporting liquor in an open container, and driving an uninsured motor vehicle. He was held for a judicial interim release hearing but has since been released from custody.

Mazzoca is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on July 15, 2026. RCMP encourages anyone who witnesses or suspects an impaired driver or any criminal activity to call 911 immediately.
