According to Ontario Provincial Police, the collision happened in the afternoon. The two recruits were travelling in a vehicle when it was struck by a transport truck. One recruit was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was airlifted to a London hospital in critical condition.
Durham Regional Police Chief Peter Dundas confirmed the tragedy, stating, "This is a devastating loss for our service and the families involved. Our thoughts are with them during this incredibly difficult time." The recruits were enrolled in training at the Ontario Police College at the time.
Investigation underway
The cause of the crash is under investigation by the OPP's Technical Collision Investigation unit. No charges have been laid yet. The transport truck driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
Imperial Road was closed for several hours for the investigation but has since reopened. Police are asking any witnesses to come forward.
