When Kelsie Loeffler and Mitch Miciak planned their dream Jamaican beach wedding, they never imagined saying "I do" surrounded by airport security and baggage claims. But Hurricane Beryl had other plans, forcing the Saskatchewan couple to execute a last-minute wedding rescue mission that turned Saskatoon's John G. Diefenbaker International Airport into the most unexpected wedding venue.
Tropical Dreams Turned Tropical Storm
The couple from Martensville, Saskatchewan had been counting down to their July 2nd beachfront ceremony in Jamaica. With 45 friends and family members having made the journey south, their paradise wedding seemed guaranteed—until weather forecasts began predicting Hurricane Beryl's catastrophic path.
The 48-Hour Wedding Rescue
"We had no backup plan," Loeffler admitted. "When we realized the hurricane was actually hitting Jamaica, we had about two days to completely replan everything."
Their wedding planner delivered the devastating news: the resort was closing, the beaches were evacuating, and their ceremony location would be underwater. With their guests already in Jamaica and wedding dresses packed, panic set in.
An Airport Becomes a Chapel
Returning to Saskatchewan ahead of schedule, the couple faced a seemingly impossible task: find a venue, coordinate with vendors, and recreate their dream wedding in less than 48 hours. That's when the Saskatoon Airport offered an unexpected solution.
"The airport staff were incredible," Miciak said. "They helped us secure a space, arranged everything we needed, and turned an ordinary airport area into our wedding venue."
Love Triumphs Over Hurricane
On their original wedding date, surrounded by their determined wedding party who had flown back from Jamaica specifically for the ceremony, the couple exchanged vows in what became one of Saskatoon's most unique weddings.
"It was stressful and chaotic, but looking back, it's our story," Loeffler reflected. "We still got married on our date, surrounded by the people who matter most. The hurricane tried to ruin our plans, but it made our wedding unforgettable."
The couple plans to honeymoon in Jamaica later this year, proving that while hurricanes can delay tropical vacations, they can't stop true love from finding its perfect moment—even if that moment happens between flight arrivals and departures.
