Vancouver's Beloved Vegan Restaurant MeeT Shutters Yaletown Location
In a significant blow to Vancouver's dining scene, the popular vegan restaurant MeeT has announced the closure of its Yaletown location after eight years of operation. This development comes during a particularly challenging period for the city's restaurant industry, which has seen multiple establishments shutter their doors recently.
End of an Era for Yaletown Vegan Dining
The MeeT team made the announcement official through an Instagram post, revealing that their eatery at 165 Mainland Street in Yaletown will serve its final meals on Saturday, March 28. The restaurant expressed gratitude to their loyal customers who have supported them through countless celebrations, date nights, and late-night dining experiences over the years.
The restaurant industry hasn't been the same since COVID, the team shared in their social media announcement. While we've remained busy, the cost structure of the industry has changed dramatically. Food and labour costs continue to rise, while many people are dining out less often.
Strategic Downsizing Amid Economic Challenges
MeeT's decision to close the Yaletown location represents a strategic consolidation of their operations. The restaurant originally opened in 2014 at 4288 Main Street, offering meat-free comfort food that quickly gained popularity among Vancouver diners. This success led to expansion with additional locations in Gastown and Yaletown.
However, the Gastown location on Water Street closed in 2025 after a decade of operation, and now the Yaletown outpost follows suit. The restaurant team explained that maintaining multiple locations in close proximity has become economically unviable given current market conditions.
Focus on Original Location with Enhanced Offerings
Despite these closures, MeeT remains committed to its original Main Street location, which will continue serving the community. The restaurant has announced exciting plans for this remaining outpost, including:
- Expanded operating hours to accommodate more customers
- Refreshed menus featuring new culinary creations
- Innovative feature programs and special offerings
- A brand new patio for outdoor dining
- Potential addition of brunch service
These changes mean it's time to focus on our original location, MeeT on Main, the team emphasized in their announcement.
Broader Restaurant Industry Challenges in Vancouver
MeeT's closure reflects broader trends affecting Vancouver's dining scene. Several other notable restaurants have recently announced closures, including:
- Bacaro, an Italian eatery located in the Fairmont Pacific Rim, which closed after five years of operation
- Gringo, a popular taco chain that has dramatically downsized operations, closing locations on Davie Street and Lonsdale Avenue
The Mexican eatery's Gastown location at 27 Blood Alley Square is currently listed as temporarily closed, with March 14 marking its last service date until further notice.
These closures highlight the ongoing challenges facing Vancouver's restaurant industry, where rising operational costs, changing consumer habits, and economic pressures continue to reshape the culinary landscape. As MeeT transitions to a single-location operation, their commitment to providing quality vegan comfort food remains unwavering, with the Main Street location poised to become an even stronger community hub for plant-based dining enthusiasts.
