Grade 6 students from Blair McPherson School in Edmonton presented a $10,000 cheque to the Make-A-Wish Foundation on June 23, 2026, capping months of fundraising efforts. The donation was made during a ceremony at the school, with students, teachers, and foundation representatives in attendance.
Student-led initiative
The fundraising campaign was entirely student-driven, according to teacher Sarah Thompson, who supervised the project. Students organized bake sales, a read-a-thon, and a school-wide talent show to raise the money. “They took ownership of every aspect,” Thompson said. “From planning to execution, they were determined to make a difference.”
The cheque presentation marked the culmination of a year-long effort that also included a penny drive and a sponsored walk. The $10,000 total exceeded the students’ initial goal of $5,000.
Impact on the community
Make-A-Wish Northern Alberta chapter director Mark Williams expressed gratitude for the donation. “This is an incredible achievement for such young students,” Williams said. “Their generosity will help grant a wish for a child with a critical illness, bringing hope and joy to a family in need.”
The funds will be allocated to a wish for a local child, though the specific wish has not yet been determined. The foundation grants wishes for children aged 3 to 17 with life-threatening medical conditions.
Broader context
The students’ effort is part of a wider trend of youth philanthropy in Alberta. According to a 2025 report by Volunteer Alberta, youth aged 12 to 18 contributed over 1.2 million volunteer hours in the province, with fundraising being a top activity.
Blair McPherson School principal David Chen praised the students’ dedication. “They learned valuable lessons about empathy, teamwork, and the power of community,” Chen said. “This experience will stay with them for life.”
