As the World Cup sweeps across the United States, international fans are discovering the country's unique charm, from its massive roadside attractions to its comforting Southern cuisine. More than 1.24 million visitors were expected to travel to the U.S. for the tournament, according to Oxford Ecosystems, which noted that the event would spark a powerful rebound in international travel, revitalizing demand, filling hotels, and showcasing the broad economic reach of mega-events.
German Influencer Raves About American Culture
German social media influencer Freddy, who boasts over half a million followers on X, has been traveling through the Deep South to follow the German national team. He has shared his amazement at the size of roadside gas station chain Buc-ee's, discovered country music star Ella Langley, and praised the kindness of locals. In one post, he wrote: "I love Americans. We were about to walk an hour to the stadium in the rain to save on an Uber, and the receptionist at the hotel we were parked in front of decided to drive us there." Houston Texans icon JJ Watt even used his influence to get Freddy a suite while he was in town.
Japanese Fan's Journey with Biscuits and Gravy
Japanese fan Nobunaga initially expressed skepticism after trying biscuits and gravy, a classic Southern dish. He posted: "USA. A breakfast counter. The waitress recommended the biscuits and gravy, and when the plate arrived, I thought something had gone wrong in the kitchen. I say this with shame. The dish looked like a construction site after rain. Pale mounds. Gray ladle-fall. Speckles I could not identify." However, after tasting it, he quickly changed his tune. "I must now formally apologize to the biscuits, the gravy, the waitress, the kitchen, and the entire breakfast tradition of the American South. It was magnificent. Warm. Peppered. The biscuit drank the gravy the way a field drinks rain," he wrote. When the waitress asked how it was, he confessed his initial judgment, and she replied, "Everybody does, hon. A national dish that forgives you for doubting it. It expects the doubt. It waits for you on the other side of it."
American Leaders Embrace the Positive Feedback
U.S. officials are taking note of the visitors' positive experiences. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy highlighted Freddy's posts, saying, "There's no better way to see our country than on a road trip! Because to LOVE AMERICA you have to SEE AMERICA." The influx of visitors is not only boosting tourism but also showcasing American hospitality and culture on a global stage.
