Weekend Decorator: Laundry Room to Bold Cottage Entryway

Interior designer Virginie Martocq helps make the most out of a small space, transforming an old laundry room into a bold new cottage entryway. The project focuses on creating a welcoming and stylish entrance that also hides coats and shoes, ideal for a four-season cottage often hosting crowds.

Designing the Space

Start with the architecture: if adding a new door, make it as large as possible. Including sidelights and a transom can brighten the room and make it feel open. Match the opening size across the way to the main living area entrance to create alignment and visually guide guests into larger rooms.

Functional Storage Solutions

Design built-in storage to accommodate all needs. Leave 24 to 30 inches on at least one side for storage and seating. Consider building two large armoires with seating in the middle, either custom-built or modified from Ikea components. Off-the-shelf armoires on either side of a bench also work.

Modular kitchen or closet systems allow a built-in look with drawers, shelves, and rods. One idea: run a shelf from wall to wall at 18 inches above the floor for seating, with storage underneath for shoes and boots. Install two storage pieces over the shelf, extending to the ceiling, with supportive legs underneath.

Enhancing the Nook

Make the seating nook more pronounced by adding a third cabinet bridging the other two at ceiling height. Trim the top with crown moulding or flat board for a built-in appearance. Opposite the storage wall, install a wall of hooks for guests and children, ensuring they are at reachable heights. Add a bench if space allows.

With these strategies, the small entryway becomes both stylish and highly functional, perfect for cottage living.
