A comprehensive five-phase master plan has been unveiled for Fortress Mountain, proposing a dramatic transformation of the former ski hill into a world-class, all-season mountain resort. The ambitious vision, prepared by planning firm Ecosign, aims to establish Fortress as a thriving destination offering authentic, nature-based experiences that capture the spirit of Alberta.

Phased Development for a Premier Destination

The master plan envisions Fortress evolving into a premier alpine ski destination complemented by a robust summer recreation program. The development is strategically designed to accommodate a balanced mix of day visitors and overnight guests, creating a sustainable tourism model for the region.

Phase One: Summer Focus and Initial Attractions

The initial phase concentrates on opening Fortress Mountain during summer months to day-trip visitors. Key attractions planned for this stage include:

  • A sightseeing gondola providing mountain access
  • A via ferrata climbing route
  • An extensive zip line experience
  • A mountain coaster thrill ride
  • Suspension bridges and mini golf facilities

During Phase 1 winter operations, activities would be more limited, featuring offerings such as tubing, tobogganing, snowshoeing, and cat skiing. The master plan estimates this phase could accommodate approximately 3,000 daily visitors, supported by about 1,100 parking stalls, bus access, and an RV lot permitting overnight parking.

Subsequent Phases: Expanding Capacity and Amenities

Phase 2 marks the beginning of overnight accommodation construction, with three buildings planned for the resort core area. As development progresses through all five phases, the resort's capacity would expand significantly to serve up to 9,650 guests daily at full buildout.

The completed vision includes extensive infrastructure:

  • Eight aerial lifts and six surface lifts
  • 1,440 day visitor parking stalls
  • 1,304 tourist accommodation units
  • More than 500 housing units
  • Nearly 700 employee housing units

Creating a Vibrant Mountain Community

At the heart of the resort experience will be a mixed-use hotel and condominium development featuring pedestrian plazas, a commercial shopping street, and spa facilities. This central hub aims to create a vibrant sense of place and welcoming atmosphere for guests, establishing Fortress as a complete mountain destination rather than just a ski area.

Historical Context and Recent Activity

Originally established in 1967 as Snowridge Ski Area, Fortress Mountain operated as a public ski destination until its closure in 2006. The existing lifts have been non-operational since that time, though cat skiing operations have continued at the site since 2011.

In recent years, Fortress has maintained visibility primarily through its use as a filming location for major motion pictures including Inception, The Revenant, and Jumanji: The Next Level. The new master plan represents the most substantial redevelopment proposal since the resort's closure nearly two decades ago.
