A 34-year-old man from Sault Ste. Marie has been charged with assaulting his dog following an incident that prompted a 911 call on June 21.
Incident Details
Sault Ste. Marie Police Service responded around 1:30 p.m. to a report of a dog being struck outside a business on Second Line West. Officers arrived at the scene and investigated the complaint.
According to police, the accused allegedly struck the dog, causing injuries. The animal was taken to a local veterinarian for treatment. The dog is expected to recover.
Charges Laid
The man was arrested and charged with one count of causing unnecessary pain or suffering to an animal under the Criminal Code. He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on August 10, 2026.
Police have not released the name of the accused to protect the identity of the victim, as per standard procedure in animal cruelty cases.

Animal welfare advocates have expressed concern over the incident. "This is a disturbing case of animal abuse," said Lisa Thompson, executive director of the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society. "We urge the public to report any suspected animal cruelty to authorities."
