Toronto Police have confirmed that a dog believed to have attacked and killed another dog, as well as injured the owner of the smaller dog, has been located. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the Weston Road and Lawrence Avenue West area.
Dog Found and Seized
The brown pit bull mix was found on Thursday around 8 p.m. in the same neighborhood. Officers from Toronto Animal Services have taken custody of the animal, and the investigation remains ongoing. Police have expressed gratitude to the public for assistance in locating the dog.
Details of the Attack
On Tuesday at approximately 4:10 p.m., police responded to a report of an assault. It is alleged that an off-leash dog attacked a small breed dog and its adult owner. The smaller dog succumbed to its injuries, while the owner sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Owner Faces Charges
The owner of the pit bull mix, Mohamoud Abdiwa Ahmed, a 40-year-old Toronto resident, was arrested on Wednesday. He faces multiple charges, including criminal negligence causing bodily harm, obstruction of property use, obstructing a peace officer, and violations under the Dog Owners’ Liability Act for dog bites and failure to prevent an attack.
Ontario implemented a pit bull ban in 2005 following a severe attack on a Toronto man. However, in 2021, the provincial government relaxed certain regulations, allowing seized dogs that appear to be a prohibited breed to be returned to owners while breed determination is pending.
