Pet Valu, a leading Canadian specialty retailer for pet food and supplies, has announced a significant philanthropic milestone for 2025. The company's Companions for Change program has already garnered more than $4.3 million in combined monetary and product donations this year, benefiting animal welfare organizations nationwide.
A Legacy of Support for Canadian Animals
Tanbir Grover, Chief Marketing and Digital Officer at Pet Valu, expressed profound gratitude for the achievement. "We're very grateful to our devoted pet lovers, franchisees, corporate store teams and vendors whose generosity helped us surpass last year's record-breaking results," Grover stated. The program, which began in 2010, has now collected close to $37 million in total, with every dollar directed to Canadian rescues, shelters, and charities.
"We're very proud that we're able to make a meaningful difference to hundreds of Canadian animal rescues, shelters and charities," Grover added, highlighting the program's commitment to distributing 100% of funds raised.
Emergency Relief and Major Capital Projects
The 2025 fundraising efforts have addressed critical needs across the country. In response to devastating wildfires and floods that displaced countless pets and their owners, the Companions for Change program provided essential supplies. Donations of food, litter, bowls, collars, leashes, and crates were delivered to organizations offering on-the-ground support.
Recipients of these emergency aid packages included:
- Animal Food Bank
- Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team (CDART)
- Steinbach Animal Rescue
- Ontario SPCA
- Niagara SPCA (for a surge in cat intake)
Beyond immediate relief, the program focuses on large-scale, transformative projects. In 2025, Pet Valu committed over $450,000 to sponsorship initiatives, funding three mobile units:
- A mobile veterinary clinic for the Coastal Animal Rescue & Education (CARE) Network Society on Vancouver Island.
- A transport bus for the Just Four Paws Rescue Society in British Columbia's lower mainland.
- A transport van for the Restigouche County SPCA (RC SPCA) in New Brunswick.
This continues a strategic shift started in 2018 to leverage the program's scale for major capital investments that enhance long-term operational capacity for shelters.
Sustained Partnership with Dog Guides and Community Shelters
Pet Valu reaffirmed its long-standing support for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. In May 2025, the company was a proud sponsor of the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides, the foundation's key annual fundraising event. This walk is crucial for raising, training, and placing assistance dogs with Canadians living with disabilities, at no cost to the recipients.
Furthermore, the Companions for Change program continues its sponsorship of the Dog Guides Feeding Program. It provides Performatrin Ultra® and Performatrin Prime® food and treats to roughly 200 puppies and dogs currently in training. An additional 20 Dog Guide teams also received sponsorship support this year.
The program's impact is also felt at the local community level. A notable example is the renewal of sponsorship for the Nova Scotia SPCA's trusted Animal Transport Vehicle, which received a fresh new look and continued operational support through the initiative.
The success of the 2025 campaign underscores the powerful combination of corporate commitment and community participation in addressing the needs of animals across Canada, from emergency response to sustainable infrastructure and specialized assistance programs.
