Calgary Group Delivers House Plants to Seniors to Combat Loneliness

A Calgary woman is tackling senior loneliness one house plant at a time. The initiative, which delivers potted greenery to elderly residents, aims to provide companionship and a sense of purpose. According to the organizer, the simple act of caring for a plant can combat feelings of isolation.

How the Program Works

The group collects donated plants, pots, and soil, then delivers them to seniors in Calgary care homes and private residences. Volunteers also spend time chatting with recipients, helping them set up their new plants. The program has already delivered over 50 plants since its launch earlier this year.

"It's amazing how something so small can make such a big difference," said the founder. "Seniors tell us they feel less alone when they have a living thing to care for."

Impact on Mental Health

Research shows that interacting with plants can reduce stress and improve mood. The Calgary initiative aligns with broader efforts to address loneliness among older adults, a growing public health concern. A 2023 study found that 40% of Canadian seniors report feeling lonely regularly.

The group plans to expand its reach, partnering with local nurseries and community centers to source more plants and volunteers. They hope to deliver 200 plants by the end of the year.
