Two Americans Arrested After Stunt at Baby Monkey Punch's Zoo in Japan
Americans Arrested at Monkey Punch's Zoo in Japan

Two American citizens were arrested in Japan on Sunday after one of them entered the monkey enclosure at a zoo where a baby macaque named Punch became a viral sensation earlier this year. The incident occurred at Ichikawa City Zoo, located just outside Tokyo.

Stunt Captured on Video

Images and video footage circulating on social media show a man dressed in a blue suit costume with a smiley face and sunglasses climbing over a fence and dropping into a dry moat surrounding the monkey exhibit. The stunt was filmed by a second individual, who was also taken into custody.

According to local authorities, the 24-year-old American college student was the one who entered the enclosure, while the 27-year-old singer recorded the event. The pair allegedly attempted to provide false names to police and had no formal identification on them.

Charges Filed

The two men face charges of forcible obstruction of business, which they deny. Police stated that the costumed individual and the cameraman did not approach the monkeys directly and were quickly apprehended by zoo officials. Monkeys scattered as the man entered their space, but no animals were harmed.

The arrests come amid a surge in tourism to Japan, which has led to increased scrutiny of unruly behavior by visitors. In a similar incident last year, a Ukrainian YouTuber was arrested for trespassing in a house within the Fukushima nuclear exclusion zone during a livestream. In 2023, a streamer known as Johnny Somali was arrested for allegedly trespassing on a construction site.

Background on Punch's Fame

The zoo has experienced a massive increase in visitors thanks to Punch's viral fame. The baby macaque captured hearts worldwide with its cute antics, drawing crowds to the facility. However, the recent stunt has raised concerns about visitor conduct and animal safety.

The two Americans remain in custody pending further investigation. The case has sparked discussions about the consequences of reckless behavior in sensitive environments, particularly those involving animals.
