An outdated staircase can significantly detract from the overall aesthetic of your home, yet it is often neglected during renovations. Updating your home does not always require extensive time, money, or planning. The staircase, as a functional connector between floors, can be refreshed with relatively simple changes. Experts agree that the payoff is satisfying and transformative.
Signs Your Staircase Needs a Makeover
According to designers consulted by The Spruce, three key elements can make a staircase look dated. Addressing these can bring your staircase into the modern era without a full renovation.
1. Ornate Ironwork
Heavy, Tuscan-inspired iron balusters with oversized scrolls, twists, and decorative knuckles are a common sign of an outdated staircase. Alexis Warren, founder of Alexis Warren Designs, notes that such ironwork often feels dated today. To update it, you can replace the balusters with straight iron spindles for a cleaner look. A more budget-friendly option is to paint the handrail in a contrasting or unexpected color, which can completely refresh the space.
2. Patterned or Stenciled Risers
Risers with etched designs, tiles, or painted gradients were once trendy but now appear outdated. Stephanie Cole, lead designer at Habitar Design, advises against decorative risers as they can detract from the overall aesthetic. The fix is simple: paint the risers a solid neutral color or sand them down to reveal the original wood and apply a stain for a classic finish.
3. Neutral Staircase Runners
While neutral carpet runners are a matter of preference, experts recommend embracing bolder choices. Instead of plain, neutral runners, opt for patterned designs, natural sisal, or runners with colored borders. This aligns with the current design trend away from minimalism and toward maximalism, incorporating vintage inspirations and interesting textures. Warren suggests that a patterned runner can make a staircase feel more layered and current. Cole recommends leaving 3 to 4 inches (7.6 to 10 cm) between the runner and the balusters and wall to showcase the wood treads.
Updating your staircase is a manageable project that can dramatically enhance your home's appearance. Whether you choose to replace ironwork, repaint risers, or swap out runners, these changes offer a high-impact refresh with minimal effort.
