Summer Sips: Three B.C. Wines to Try Now
As summer continues, it's time to explore new vintage releases from local wineries. We're still in the midst of whites and rosés, with 2025 vintage reds still some time away. These wines are best suited for warmer, longer days and the meals typically served this time of year.
Volcanic Hills Estate Winery 2025 Magma White
Volcanic Hills Estate Winery's 2025 Magma White (from $20.09) is a friendly, fruity white blend ideal for al fresco gatherings. The blend consists of 54% Pinot Gris, 33% Gewürztraminer, 8% Riesling, and 6% Viognier, mostly estate-grown in West Kelowna. It is extremely aromatic and expressive, with a floral potpourri character. Residual sugars bring a complementary smooth finish, making it a great partner with spicier grilled fare. Bottom line: B. Textural and crowd pleasing.
Noble Ridge Vineyard & Winery 2025 Noble Unoaked Chardonnay
Noble Ridge Vineyard & Winery's 2025 Noble Unoaked Chardonnay ($24.99, #668029) offers a crisp and fresh alternative. While the unoaked classification arose as a differentiator from poor-quality Chardonnay over-oaked with chips, this wine showcases unadulterated apple and orchard fruit nuances. It pairs well with grilled chicken or pork. Bottom line: A-.
Blasted Church 2025 Blaufränkisch Rosé
Blasted Church's 2025 Blaufränkisch Rosé ($28) is a bright, vibrant pink rosé made from 100% Blaufränkisch grapes grown on the Skaha Bench. It is half whole cluster pressed and entirely barrel fermented, bursting with berry and watermelon Jolly Rancher aromas. A juicy entry leads to a tart mid-palate before a balanced, soft, and savoury yet fresh finish. Bottom line: B+. Total taco wine.
