Ford Recalls 200K Vehicles for Transmission Issue

Ford Motor Company is recalling over 200,000 vehicles in North America due to a potential transmission issue that could cause unintended movement, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall affects certain 2021-2023 model year Ford F-150 pickup trucks and 2022-2023 Ford Maverick compact pickups, as well as 2022-2023 Ford Bronco SUVs.

Scope of the Recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the recall covers approximately 208,000 vehicles in the United States and about 17,000 in Canada. The problem stems from a software error in the transmission control module that may fail to properly detect the transmission's gear position, potentially allowing the vehicle to move unexpectedly when the driver intends to park.

Details of the Issue

According to Ford, the transmission control module may not correctly interpret the gear selector position, which could result in the vehicle rolling away after the driver has exited. This issue has been linked to at least four reports of injuries and several property damage claims. The company said it is not aware of any crashes or fatalities related to this defect.

Remedy for Affected Owners

Ford will notify affected owners starting July 15, 2026, and dealers will update the transmission control module software free of charge. Owners can also check if their vehicle is included in the recall by visiting Ford's recall website or contacting their local dealer. The company urges owners to follow the parking brake procedure until the software update is applied.

Impact on Owners

In the interim, Ford recommends that drivers engage the parking brake before exiting the vehicle to prevent any unintended movement. The recall is expected to be completed by August 2026.
