Vancouver Women's Day March Set for Record Participation in 2026
On March 8, 2026, communities worldwide will unite to celebrate the 115th anniversary of International Women's Day, a global movement dedicated to honoring women's achievements, addressing discrimination, and advancing gender parity. In Vancouver, the Vancouver Women's Day Association (VWDA) is preparing for what organizers anticipate will be the largest turnout yet for their annual march.
Grassroots Organization Leads Local Celebration
The VWDA, founded by Yasmin Simsek in 2023 as a grassroots, community-led organization originally known as the Vancouver International Women's Day committee, will host its fourth annual International Women's Day March from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the north side of the Vancouver Art Gallery. The organization's mission centers on celebrating, amplifying, and advocating alongside the diverse community of self-identifying women in Vancouver to promote equity and raise awareness of the challenges women face.
"The march has a ripple effect," explains Simsek, founder and chair of VWDA. "Everyone who attends takes what they've experienced and learned back to their own communities, and that's how we achieve change."
Intersectional Approach and Global Theme
Built on principles of intersectional feminism, solidarity, coalitional politics, community engagement, and bravery, the VWDA organizes the yearly march to stand in solidarity with women and marginalized groups both locally and globally. The 2026 International Women's Day theme, #GiveToGain, serves as a global call for individuals, organizations, and communities to support the advancement of women and girls worldwide through various means including donations, advocacy, education, and mentorship.
"For us, Give to Gain is very much about collaboration and connectedness," says Simsek. "This speaks directly to our march and how we do things—we're here to represent the community and create opportunities for collaboration for self-identifying women and all the incredible organizations in our city. The goal is to help us unite so we might do things together for the betterment of all self-identifying women in Vancouver."
Event Features and Community Dialogue
Beyond the march for gender equality and empowerment, the March 8 event will feature several engaging components:
- A panel of local feminist speakers addressing pressing community concerns
- Interactive poster-making activities
- A merchandise booth with exclusive 2026 designs
The speaker panel will facilitate ongoing dialogue about issues affecting women in Vancouver and globally, with this year's discussions including Palestinian representation, access to abortion as more than just a women's issue, and 2SLGBTQIA+ rights in educational settings.
Growing Momentum and Participation Guidelines
After three consecutive years of increasing attendance, the VWDA expects 2026 to mark the most significant participation yet. The organization emphasizes that the only requirement for participation is arriving with kindness and contributing to creating a safe, successful march experience for all attendees.
This annual event continues to serve as a powerful platform for community mobilization, education, and advocacy, reflecting both local concerns and the broader global movement for women's rights and gender equality that has been building momentum since International Women's Day was first observed in 1911.
