A dangerous and alarming incident unfolded in Toronto's west end early Thursday morning when paramedics responding to an emergency call became targets themselves.
Toronto police are actively searching for suspects after a large rock was deliberately thrown at an ambulance SUV while paramedics were en route to a shooting scene. The attack occurred around 2:30 a.m. in the Lawrence Avenue West and Black Creek Drive area.
Emergency Response Turns Dangerous
The paramedic unit was racing to respond to reports of a shooting when their specially marked SUV was struck by the projectile. Fortunately, the two paramedics inside the vehicle escaped physical injury, but the incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of first responders.
This represents the 16th such attack on Toronto paramedics this year alone, highlighting a disturbing trend of violence against emergency medical personnel.
Police Investigation Underway
Investigators have confirmed the rock caused significant damage to the emergency vehicle. Police are now reviewing area surveillance footage and seeking witnesses who might have information about the suspect or suspects responsible.
"Any attack on our first responders is completely unacceptable," said Toronto Paramedic Services Chief Paul Raftis. "Our crews are out there trying to save lives, and to have them targeted while doing their job is deeply concerning."
Growing Safety Concerns
The incident has sparked renewed discussions about protecting emergency workers:
- Increased security measures for paramedic vehicles
 - Enhanced penalties for assaults on first responders
 - Community awareness about the dangers facing emergency personnel

Toronto police are urging anyone with information about this incident to come forward as they continue their search for those responsible.
