E. Coli Contamination Prompts Urgent Ground Beef Recall at Pierrefonds Grocery Store

Quebec's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ) has issued a critical public health warning regarding potential E. coli contamination in ground beef and pork products sold exclusively at Intermarché Palumbo Pierrefonds. The recall affects multiple meat products packaged on February 24, 2026, and sold in the store's refrigerated section.

Affected Products and Specific Details

The recalled items were packaged in polystyrene trays covered with plastic wrap and include:

  • Milk-fed veal
  • Extra lean ground beef
  • Lean ground beef
  • Minced beef
  • Minced pork of variable weights

Important note: These products were only available at the Intermarché Palumbo Pierrefonds location and carry the packaging date of February 24, 2026. MAPAQ has identified that these items are likely to contain Shiga toxin-producing E. coli bacteria, which can cause serious illness.

Immediate Consumer Actions Required

"Anyone in possession of one of these products is advised not to consume it. They should return it to the store where it was purchased or discard it," MAPAQ emphasized in their official press release. The grocery store is voluntarily recalling the affected products in cooperation with both the Ministry and Montreal's Food Inspection Division as a precautionary measure.

Consumers should be aware that food contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli bacteria may not show any visible signs of spoilage or have suspicious odors, making visual inspection unreliable. Proper identification through packaging dates and store of purchase is essential.

Health Risks and Symptoms to Monitor

Consuming contaminated products can lead to serious or potentially fatal illness. Symptoms typically appear two to ten days after ingestion and may include:

  1. Diarrhea
  2. Abdominal pain and cramping
  3. Blood in stool
  4. Nausea and vomiting
  5. Fever

"It is strongly recommended to seek medical help immediately if these symptoms appear," MAPAQ advised. "Most symptoms disappear within five to ten days, but prompt medical attention is crucial for proper management."

Food Safety Recommendations and Current Status

MAPAQ notes that cooking meat properly can destroy E. coli bacteria if cooked sufficiently long at high enough temperatures. However, given the contamination risk, consumers should not attempt to cook and consume the recalled products.

As of Thursday afternoon, no cases of illness associated with the recalled products have been reported to MAPAQ. This proactive recall aims to prevent potential health incidents before they occur.

The Ministry continues to monitor the situation and advises consumers to check their refrigerators and freezers for any affected products purchased from Intermarché Palumbo Pierrefonds with the February 24, 2026 packaging date.
