Yoga Poses Fill Mall to Spotlight Eating Disorder Awareness
In a unique blend of wellness and advocacy, the quiet halls of Windsor's Devonshire Mall transformed early Sunday morning as more than 20 participants gathered for a special yoga session. This event, striking warrior and triangle poses, served as the opening act for Eating Disorders Awareness Week, running from February 1 to 7, 2026.
Community Collaboration for Mental Health
The yoga class was organized through a partnership between the Bulimia Anorexia Nervosa Association (BANA), a Windsor-based non-profit, and athletic apparel retailer Lululemon. According to Adriana Grande, a health educator with BANA, this week provides a crucial opportunity to engage the public on mental health issues, with a specific focus on eating disorders.
"It's a time that we can raise awareness and engage the public to let them know about mental health in general, but specifically about eating disorders, which is a mental health diagnosis," Grande explained.
Addressing a Growing Need Post-Pandemic
Grande highlighted that the demand for eating disorder support has surged significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic, a trend reflected across Canada. She pointed to social media's profound influence on young people's body image and self-esteem as a key contributing factor to this increase.
"Definitely since COVID, we've seen an even bigger increase in need," Grande stated. "And that's something that's reflected across the country."
Combatting Stigma and Myths
The event also aimed to dismantle persistent stigmas surrounding body types and eating disorders. Grande noted that these misconceptions can prevent individuals from recognizing their own struggles.
"There's a lot of myths surrounding eating disorders," she said. "We really just want to bust those myths, make sure that everyone who is suffering, whether that be in silence or with support, get the help that they need."
Week-Long Awareness Initiatives
This yoga session was just the first in a series of events planned by BANA throughout Eating Disorders Awareness Week. Additional activities include:
- A virtual workshop on eating disorders scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
- An Instagram Live session on Thursday focusing on tips for a healthier social media experience.
Eating Disorders Awareness Week has been observed in Canada since 1988, dedicated to shedding light on the causes, prevalence, and impact of these conditions. The week encourages open dialogue and education to support those affected.
