Katie Couric Opens Up About Her Deepest Regret Following Husband's Tragic Death
Renowned broadcast journalist Katie Couric is sharing a poignant reflection on what she describes as her "biggest regret" from the period when she cared for her late husband, Jay Monahan, before his death nearly three decades ago. Monahan, with whom Couric shares two daughters, passed away on January 24, 1998, at the age of 42 after a battle with colorectal cancer. At the time, Couric was a prominent host on NBC's "Today" show, balancing her career with the immense personal challenge of her husband's illness.
A Painful Silence in the Face of Mortality
In a recent interview with USA Today, Couric, now 69, revealed that her primary regret stems from avoiding difficult conversations about the possibility of Monahan's death. "My biggest regret, I think, was that I never really talked to my husband about the possibility that he might die, quite frankly. We never had those hard conversations," she confessed. She emphasized how shocking the diagnosis was at the time, noting that it left them both unprepared for the emotional and practical realities of terminal illness.
Couric expressed a wish that they had sought professional guidance during that trying period. "I wish we had gone to talk to somebody who could have helped facilitate that kind of conversation, honestly, because the only way I knew to deal with Jay’s illness was to not give up hope and keep saying, 'We’ll figure this out.'" She acknowledged that while maintaining hope is crucial for navigating "the worst circumstances imaginable," staying in denial can prevent families from planning effectively for the future.
The Burden of Caregiving and Personal Health Struggles
Reflecting on her role as a caregiver, Couric admitted, "There are a lot of things I never talked to Jay about because I couldn’t deal with bringing up the possibility that he wouldn’t be around. As a caregiver, that’s probably my biggest regret." This regret has been compounded by her own health journey; nearly 25 years after Monahan's death, Couric was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022. She underwent surgery and radiation treatment, emerging as a vocal advocate for timely medical screenings after her cancer was detected following a delayed annual mammogram and ultrasound.
Advice for Caregivers: Embrace Support and Self-Care
In the same interview, Couric offered heartfelt advice to other caregivers, urging them not to hesitate in seeking and accepting help. "You need to have a respite for your own physical and mental health," she explained. She shared that she attempted to take breaks during Monahan's illness, though it sometimes brought feelings of guilt. "I felt guilty at times, but I knew that I was going to explode if I didn’t do that." Her message underscores the importance of balancing care for others with self-preservation, a lesson learned through personal hardship and loss.
