Jordan Peterson in 'Hellish' Battle Against Neurological Condition Relapse

Canadian psychologist, best-selling author, and media commentator Jordan Peterson is reportedly facing a recurrence of akathisia, a severe neurological condition that his family attributes to his past use of psychiatric medications. In a recent video update, his daughter Mikhaila Peterson described the past year as devastating for the family, centered on her father's deteriorating health and the relapse of symptoms he first experienced years ago.

Family Describes 'Intolerable Discomfort' and Agonizing Symptoms

In an emotional 33-minute statement shared on Saturday, Mikhaila Peterson, 34, detailed what she called a "hellish" period for the Peterson family. She explained that akathisia is marked by intense inner restlessness, agitation, and an inability to remain still, creating what she described as "intolerable discomfort that makes people want to crawl out of their skin."

"A lot of people do not survive it, and there is no quick fix," Mikhaila emphasized in her video update, which was occasionally tearful and conveyed the family's exhaustion.

Understanding Akathisia and Its Connection to Medication

According to medical sources like the Cleveland Clinic, akathisia is most commonly associated with side effects from certain medications, particularly antipsychotics, antidepressants, and benzodiazepines, though it can arise through other mechanisms as well. While not fatal, the condition can cause "a poor quality of life" and lead to severe anxiety, dysphoria, and suicidal ideation.

Mikhaila Peterson revealed that she had her own "brief experience" with akathisia about a decade ago when withdrawing from Lexapro, claiming to be "nearly disabled" for over two and a half years, though she noted her symptoms weren't as severe as what her father is currently experiencing.

Recent Health Challenges and Public Withdrawal

This latest health setback comes after Peterson stepped back from public engagements last year following a diagnosis of chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS), which his daughter stressed at the time was unrelated to akathisia. The current relapse represents what Mikhaila called an "old neurological injury" that has resurfaced, creating significant challenges for the prominent public figure.

Despite the difficult circumstances, Mikhaila Peterson reported that her father's condition is showing signs of improvement, offering a glimmer of hope amid what has been an extremely challenging period for the Peterson family.
