Spenser Dionne, a nurse whose dedication to patient care extended far beyond the bedside, has been named the 2026 recipient of the Lois Fairley Nursing Award. The award, now in its 19th year, honors a nurse who demonstrates exceptional commitment to community service through excellence in nursing care.
Exceptional Compassion Recognized
Dionne, who works in the clinical teaching unit at Windsor Regional Hospital, was presented with the award on Monday at the hospital's Ouellette campus. The ceremony highlighted her extraordinary efforts in caring for a patient who had suffered a severe stroke.
Ryan Peebles nominated Dionne for the award, describing how she provided care that went well beyond standard clinical duties. In his nomination, Peebles wrote, "Spenser provided more than just medical monitoring. She provided a sense of home. She went far beyond the boundaries of a standard shift, bringing in flowers, pictures, and even her own learning materials and glasses from home to help stimulate my mother's recovery."
Dedication Beyond Work Hours
Peebles noted that Dionne's commitment continued even outside her scheduled shifts. "Dionne's dedication was so profound that she frequently used her personal days off to come into the hospital to ensure my mother's care remained consistent," he wrote. "Even after my mother transitioned to a nursing home, Spenser continued to check in on her, demonstrating a level of community-minded advocacy that is rare and deeply moving."
About the Award
The Lois Fairley Nursing Award is named in memory of the late Lois Fairley, a passionate advocate for patients, colleagues, and the community. Fairley graduated from the Salvation Army Grace Hospital's nursing program in 1955 and dedicated her entire career there until her retirement in 1993. The award recognizes nurses who embody her spirit of service and excellence.
Dionne's recognition underscores the profound impact that compassionate nursing can have on patients and their families, highlighting the importance of going above and beyond in healthcare.
