Texas Nurse Airlifted from Japan Honeymoon with Sudden Liver Failure
A Texas nurse is fighting for her life after being airlifted back to the United States from Japan, where she fell critically ill during her honeymoon. Sarah Danh, 27, was hospitalized with acute liver failure just days after arriving in Tokyo with her new husband.
Honeymoon Turns into Medical Nightmare
Sarah Danh and Luke Gradl, 28, married in Houston on March 21 in what they described as their "dream wedding." The couple embarked on their honeymoon to Japan on April 8, but their romantic getaway quickly turned into a medical emergency.
The newlyweds arrived in Tokyo and checked into their hotel, where Danh began feeling unwell. The next day, her condition deteriorated rapidly, prompting Gradl to rush her to the hospital. She was initially admitted to the emergency room before being moved to the intensive care unit due to what doctors described as a "life-threatening health decline."
Critical Symptoms and Diagnosis
Danh presented with severe symptoms including jaundice, body aches, and vomiting. Japanese doctors diagnosed her with acute liver failure, though her husband reported she was also suffering from kidney failure and increased intracranial brain pressure.
The labor and delivery nurse, who appeared completely healthy prior to the honeymoon according to family members, now requires a liver transplant. The cause of her sudden health decline remains unknown, with medical teams in both Japan and the United States working to determine what triggered the life-threatening condition.
Complex Medical Evacuation
After nearly two weeks of hospitalization in Japan, Danh was airlifted back to San Antonio on Tuesday evening via a 20-hour emergency medical flight. The complex evacuation was coordinated by AirMed and Danh's employer, Methodist Hospital Stone Oak in San Antonio.
Video shared by family members shows Danh strapped to a gurney being carefully loaded into the medical plane. Her uncle, Khang Le, described the high-risk flight as "worth taking if we want her to have any chance of recovery."
Financial and Medical Challenges
The medical crisis has created significant financial strain for the newlyweds. Japanese hospital policies required full payment of medical bills before Danh could be discharged for the evacuation. A GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $178,000 to help cover medical expenses and the costs associated with her ongoing treatment.
Danh is now stable but remains under close medical observation at a San Antonio hospital. Her condition continues to be evaluated by specialists as they work to determine the appropriate course of treatment, including the urgent need for a liver transplant.
Family Updates and Support
Family members have been providing regular updates through social media. Le's most recent post confirmed Danh's safe arrival in San Antonio, noting that "her condition is currently being evaluated by the doctors."
The sudden nature of the illness has shocked family and friends, with Gradl emphasizing that "there were no health signs at our wedding" just weeks before the medical emergency unfolded during what should have been a celebratory honeymoon period for the newly married couple.
