The Scarborough Health Network (SHN) has received a transformative $30 million gift from The Northpine Foundation to address growing cancer care demand and primary care shortages in the community. This donation will fund the creation of the Northpine Cancer Care Centre at SHN's General Hospital, expand a new primary care model, and establish a professorship in critical care research.
Cancer Care Expansion
SHN experienced over 68,000 oncology visits in 2025, a 22% increase from three years prior. The new Northpine Cancer Care Centre will boost treatment capacity, enhance patient experience, and provide space for psychosocial oncology services and pharmacy support.
Primary Care Access
Nearly 100,000 Scarborough residents lack a family doctor, leading to one in five emergency visits being for primary care needs. The gift will connect 15,000 complex-needs patients to an Interprofessional Primary Care Team offering coordinated, culturally responsive care.
Critical Care Research
The donation establishes the Northpine Professorship in Critical Care Research, held by Dr. Christopher Yarnell. His work focuses on optimizing supportive care like ventilators and electrolytes for pneumonia and severe infections, aiming to improve care quality and equity.
Community Impact
This second gift from Northpine Foundation brings the Love, Scarborough campaign total to over $260 million. Alicia Vandermeer, SHN Foundation President & CEO, called it a powerful investment in healthcare excellence. Founders John and Cathy Phillips emphasized their belief in SHN's effectiveness for improving community outcomes.
