The mobile clinic, staffed by dermatologist Dr. Denise Wexler, will be set up at various locations across the city on July 4-5, 2026, offering free screenings to the public.
Free Screenings Aim to Catch Skin Cancer Early
Dr. Denise Wexler, a leading dermatologist in the region, is spearheading the initiative to make skin cancer detection more accessible. 'Early detection is key to successful treatment,' Dr. Wexler said. 'We want to remove barriers like cost and convenience so more people can get checked.' The clinic is equipped to examine moles and provide immediate feedback on whether further medical attention is needed.
The 'Mole Mobile' is part of a broader effort to reduce skin cancer rates in Ontario, where melanoma diagnoses have been rising. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, an estimated 9,000 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in Canada this year, with about 1,200 deaths. The mobile clinic aims to catch cases early, when treatment is most effective.
How the Clinic Works
Patients can walk in without an appointment or book a time slot online. The process involves a brief consultation and a visual examination of moles using a dermatoscope. If a mole appears suspicious, Dr. Wexler may recommend a biopsy or a follow-up with a family doctor. The service is completely free, funded by a grant from the Ontario Ministry of Health and donations from local businesses.
Marg, a patient seen at the clinic on July 4, expressed relief at the convenience. 'I've been meaning to get this mole checked for months, but I never found the time,' she said. 'This mobile clinic made it so easy.'
Community Response and Future Plans
Local health officials have praised the initiative. 'This is a fantastic way to bring preventive care directly to the people,' said Dr. Sarah Mitchell, medical officer of health for Middlesex-London. 'We hope to see more such mobile services in the future.'
The 'Mole Mobile' will be parked at the Western Fair Market on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and at the Covent Garden Market on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Organizers plan to expand the program to other cities in Ontario later this year.
