Jury sees police body cam video of murder suspect leading to mother's body

A Calgary jury was shown police body-worn camera footage Friday of murder suspect Alex (Aixin) Xu calmly admitting to killing his mother and directing officers to her body.

Officer's testimony

Const. Jameel Ali testified that when he arrived at a welfare check call near Foothills Medical Centre on June 30, 2023, he greeted two males standing by a parked SUV. The younger man, identified as Xu, approached him and said, "good, good, I murdered my mom."

Ali immediately ordered Xu to the ground. When asked where his mother was, Xu replied, "Fifty metres over there," pointing east of the hospital. Ali placed Xu under arrest for murder, to which Xu responded, "Oh, of course. Yeah."

Body-worn camera footage

The footage played for the Court of King's Bench jury showed Xu pointing toward houses on 29th Street N.W. When Ali asked him to point directly, Xu said, "Kind of hard in handcuffs," before turning and gesturing again. He indicated the body was "in between the houses."

Within two minutes, acting sergeant Const. Felipe Fontan located the body of Alice (Jingying) Ai a short distance away. Xu is charged with second-degree murder in his mother's death.

Court proceedings

Ali testified he did not notice any signs of impairment in Xu, who was with his father at the scene. Under cross-examination by defence lawyer Dale Fedorchuk, Ali agreed Xu's demeanour was "out of the ordinary" and shocking. The trial resumes Monday.
