SPRI's Johnny Huard Honored with Prestigious Arnold I. Caplan Award
Johnny Huard Receives Arnold I. Caplan Award at AAOS

Johnny Huard, Ph.D., the Chief Scientific Officer and Director of the Linda & Mitch Hart Center for Regenerative and Personalized Medicine at the Steadman Philippon Research Institute (SPRI), has been honored with the second annual Arnold I. Caplan Award. This prestigious recognition was presented by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) during their annual meeting held in New Orleans on March 4, 2026.

Celebrating a Legacy of Innovation in Orthobiologics

The Arnold I. Caplan Award for Distinguished Research in Orthobiologics is a distinguished accolade that acknowledges researchers whose contributions have significantly propelled the development of new therapeutic solutions in the fields of orthobiologics and Medicinal Signaling Cells (MSCs). Established in 2025 through the generous support of the Caplan family and administered by the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF), this award honors the pioneering legacy of Arnold Caplan, Ph.D., a trailblazer in regenerative medicine.

Groundbreaking Research Recognized

Dr. Huard was selected for this honor based on his influential manuscript titled "Mesenchymal Stem Cells or Medicinal Signaling Cells (MSCs): Origin, Mechanism of Action(s) & Clinical Application of MSCs." This work encapsulates nearly three decades of dedicated research into adult stem cells, highlighting one of his most notable discoveries: the isolation of MSCs from adult skeletal muscle, known as muscle-derived stem cells (MDSCs). These cells possess stem-cell-like properties and have become a cornerstone in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, with applications addressing injuries, diseases, and age-related degeneration.

Reflecting on the achievement, Dr. Huard expressed his gratitude, stating, "This is an incredible honor and one I will never forget. The Caplan Award is still very new, and to be only its second recipient, chosen from the long list of outstanding scientists and researchers in the field, is extremely rewarding." He emphasized the sustained effort required in advancing tangible research, adding, "I am humbled that the AAOS has rewarded nearly 35 years of my work with this prestigious award named for Dr. Caplan."

Leadership and Impact at SPRI

Dr. Huard's leadership has been instrumental in elevating SPRI's status as a top-tier research institute globally. Marc J. Philippon, M.D., Chair of SPRI and Managing Partner of The Steadman Clinic, praised his contributions, noting, "Dr. Huard has helped put SPRI among the very top of research institutes across the world. His leadership has allowed our institution to move toward the clinical translation of stem cells in numerous clinical trials that are currently funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Defense (DoD)."

Under Dr. Huard's guidance, SPRI has expanded its biologic investigations into areas such as extracellular vesicles, fostering a culture of continuous innovation. He has assembled a renowned research team that conducts exceptional and groundbreaking studies, further solidifying his reputation as an elite scientist in the field, particularly within the Vail community where SPRI is based.

The award not only recognizes Dr. Huard's past achievements but also underscores the ongoing evolution of biologics research, as new discoveries continue to shape the future of regenerative medicine and therapeutic applications.
