A tragic incident unfolded in northern Saskatchewan on May 8, when a 27-year-old contractor was fatally attacked by a black bear near Points North Landing. The attack occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. at UraniumX Discovery Corp.'s Zoo Bay property in the Athabasca Basin, about 80 kilometers from the Points North Landing hub.
Company Response and Condolences
UraniumX CEO Esen Boldkhuu expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, 'Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.' The company emphasized that safety remains its highest priority and commended the rapid response of the on-site team, service providers, and emergency responders.
Temporary Suspension of Activities
All field activities at the Zoo Bay property have been temporarily halted pending a review of the incident. Exploration and development at other company projects continue unaffected.
Bear Euthanized and Investigation Underway
According to officials, the black bear involved in the attack was euthanized by a civilian at the scene before conservation officers arrived. The animal was transported to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan for a necropsy.
The Conservation Officer Service's Wildlife Human Attack Response Team, in coordination with the RCMP and the provincial coroner, is investigating the incident. The ministry noted that the investigation is in its early stages.
