WHO Raises Ebola Risk to 'Very High' in Congo as Outbreak Spreads Rapidly
WHO: Ebola Risk 'Very High' in Congo as Outbreak Spreads

The World Health Organization declared on Friday that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is intensifying, elevating the national risk level to 'very high'. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom confirmed that the assessment was revised upward from 'high' due to the rapid spread of the virus.

Current Situation

As of the latest reports, there are 82 confirmed cases of Ebola in Congo, with seven confirmed deaths. However, Tedros cautioned that the actual scale of the epidemic is likely much larger, with nearly 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths recorded. The situation in neighboring Uganda remains relatively stable, with two confirmed cases among individuals who traveled from Congo and one death.

International Response

In response to the escalating crisis, the United Nations has released $60 million from its Central Emergency Response Fund to accelerate containment efforts in Congo and the broader region. The United States has pledged an additional $23 million to bolster the response in both Congo and Uganda, including funding for up to 50 Ebola treatment clinics in affected areas. However, Ugandan authorities stated they were unaware of any such clinics being established by the U.S.
