The Stephanie and Barry Zekelman Foundation has made a transformative $3 million donation to the Ronald McDonald House in Windsor, Ontario, announced on April 29, 2026. This significant contribution is expected to greatly expand the facility's capacity to accommodate families with children receiving medical treatment at nearby hospitals.
Expanding Services for Families
The donation will fund the construction of additional family suites, common areas, and support services, allowing the house to serve more families from Windsor and the surrounding region. Currently, the Ronald McDonald House provides a home-away-from-home for families, offering private bedrooms, communal kitchens, and play areas at little or no cost.
Barry Zekelman, CEO of Zekelman Industries, stated that the foundation is committed to supporting the health and well-being of children and their families. "We believe that no family should have to worry about where to stay while their child is in the hospital," he said. "This donation is a gamechanger for Windsor families."
Community Impact
Local officials and hospital administrators praised the donation, noting that the expansion will alleviate the financial burden on families and reduce waitlists for accommodations. The Ronald McDonald House in Windsor has been operating since 2012 and has served thousands of families from across the region.
The expansion project is expected to break ground later this year, with completion targeted for 2027. The new facility will include additional bedrooms, a larger kitchen, and enhanced recreational spaces for children and their siblings.
