How to Identify Counterfeit Bills
Counterfeiters are becoming increasingly sophisticated, but there are still several telltale signs that can help you identify fake money. The Bank of Canada recommends checking the following security features:
- Raised ink: On genuine bills, the large number and the portrait have a raised texture that you can feel with your fingernail.
- Transparent window: Hold the bill up to the light. The window should be clear and contain a metallic image that matches the denomination.
- Holographic stripe: Tilt the bill to see the holographic images shift and change color.
- Hidden number: Look for a small number hidden within the bill's design that matches the denomination.
- UV features: Under ultraviolet light, genuine bills display specific fluorescent patterns.
What to Do If You Suspect a Fake Bill
If you believe you have received counterfeit money, do not return it to the passer. Instead, contact your local police immediately. Handle the bill as little as possible and place it in an envelope to preserve any fingerprints. Note any details about the person who gave you the bill, such as their appearance and vehicle information.
