Woman's Body Found on Carnival Cruise Ship After Balcony Fall

A tragic incident occurred aboard the Carnival Firenze cruise ship early Monday when a female passenger fell from her stateroom balcony and landed on a lower deck. The ship was sailing near Catalina Island, off the Southern California coast, at the time of the incident.

Details of the Incident

The woman was traveling with her family, who alerted the ship's crew after realizing what had happened. The crew immediately responded, but the passenger was found deceased. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed that the investigation has been handed over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

A spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line stated, "As is customary following these kinds of incidents, law enforcement was on board while the ship was in Catalina Island on Monday to collect information. The female guest was travelling with family, who alerted the ship’s crew of the situation. The family is now off the ship and has returned home."

Further details, such as the woman's identity or nationality, have not been released. The cause of the fall remains under investigation.

Carnival's Response

Carnival expressed condolences and support for the family. "Carnival’s Care Team is supporting the guest’s family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved one," the company said in a statement.

The Carnival Firenze is a large vessel capable of carrying up to 4,162 guests and 1,425 crew members. It offers itineraries to destinations including the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada and New England, the Caribbean, Mexico, and South America.

Recent Tragedies on Carnival Ships

This incident is not isolated. Just last week, the search was called off for a passenger in his 70s who reportedly jumped from the Carnival Splendour while it was sailing toward Sydney, Australia. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) conducted an intensive search after the man was reported missing at sea about 30 kilometers northeast of Moreland Island, off the coast of Brisbane, on April 17. A review of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage confirmed the guest's action.

In a separate case, nearly six months ago, 18-year-old Anna Kepner was found dead aboard a Carnival cruise ship under mysterious circumstances. The cheerleader was discovered wrapped in a blanket and shoved under a bed in the cabin she shared with her 16-year-old stepbrother, Timothy Hudson. Hudson now faces charges of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse, and he is being tried as an adult, facing a possible life sentence.

The FBI is leading the investigation into the latest death, and no further details have been disclosed at this time.
