Tumbler Ridge Shooting Survivor Demonstrates Remarkable Neurological Progress

Twelve-year-old Maya Gebala, who suffered devastating gunshot wounds during the February 10th Tumbler Ridge tragedy, has achieved a significant milestone in her recovery journey. According to recent updates from her parents, the young survivor has been successfully removed from ventilator support and is demonstrating encouraging neurological improvement at BC Children's Hospital.

Parental Updates Reveal Encouraging Developments

Maya's mother, Cia Edmonds, shared on social media that medical professionals removed her daughter's breathing tube to assess independent respiratory function. "What a terrifying experience," Edmonds wrote, describing the tense moment while holding her daughter's hand during the procedure. "She's doing great. Best that could have been. My sweet girl is looking more like her beautiful self today."

David Gebala, Maya's father, provided additional details about his daughter's physical progress. "She's been fairly active, moving the left side of her body, and she even pushed herself up using the foot of the bed," he reported. These movements represent significant neurological milestones for a patient recovering from traumatic brain injury.

Medical Imaging Shows Clear Improvement

The medical team recently presented the Gebala family with updated CT scans that revealed substantial improvement from earlier imaging. "They are some of the clearest we've seen yet," David Gebala noted. "What an incredible improvement from the earlier ones."

While cautious optimism prevails, the family acknowledges the ongoing nature of Maya's recovery. "We're not saying we're in the clear," her father emphasized. "This is still something we have to take day by day, but she keeps pushing and showing us she's there."

Additional Positive Neurological Signs

Beyond the major milestone of ventilator removal, medical staff have observed several other encouraging developments:

  • Minimal movement in Maya's right arm and leg on multiple occasions
  • Positive reaction to light in her left eye
  • Increased overall physical activity and responsiveness

"It might seem little but it's a lot for her! And huge for all of us," David Gebala wrote regarding these incremental improvements.

Background of the Tumbler Ridge Tragedy

Maya Gebala was among the most critically injured victims during the February 10th shooting rampage in northeastern British Columbia. The incident, perpetrated by 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, resulted in nine fatalities and twenty-seven injuries across the small community.

The young survivor sustained two gunshot wounds—one to the neck and another to the head—requiring immediate emergency airlift to specialized medical facilities. Her recovery has involved multiple surgical interventions and extensive rehabilitation efforts following the traumatic injuries.

The Gebala family continues to maintain their hopeful perspective as Maya progresses through her recovery. "Step by step. Day by day. We will get there," David Gebala concluded in his social media update, reflecting the family's determined outlook amid challenging circumstances.
