A Toronto Police officer has been shot and is clinging to life after being rushed to hospital in an emergency run. The incident occurred while officers were executing a search warrant early Thursday morning, just hours before Toronto's opening game of the FIFA World Cup.
Police say the shooting happened at approximately 5:42 a.m. in the area of Tretheway Drive and Black Creek Drive. According to authorities, officers were conducting a search warrant when an exchange of gunfire took place, resulting in the officer being shot.
Witnesses reported hearing up to ten gunshots. A former police officer described a frantic scene with cars racing to the site and paramedics working feverishly to attend to the injured. Both the officer and a suspect are believed to have been shot and are in life-threatening condition.
