A McDonald's employee in California remains hospitalized in intensive care after a coworker allegedly threw hot oil on him in an unprovoked attack. Jacob Smith, 20, sustained second-degree burns across his face, neck, arm, and back during the incident on May 30 at a McDonald's in Yuba City, California.
Details of the Attack
According to authorities, Jalani Bluett, 23, is alleged to have thrown hot oil on Smith without warning. Bluett initially fled the scene and was reported missing before being arrested. He now faces multiple felony charges, including battery causing serious bodily injury, and is being held without bail.
Smith's mother, Amber Smith, described the attack as a nightmare. 'What should have been a normal day at work turned into a nightmare when a coworker assaulted him by throwing hot oil on him,' she wrote on a GoFundMe page set up to support her son's recovery.
Victim's Condition and Recovery
Jacob has been in the ICU for over a week, enduring excruciating pain. Doctors are working to reduce the size of his burns to minimize the need for skin grafts. His mother shared that Jacob asked her, 'Why would he do this to me?' as he struggles to understand the attack.
Despite the trauma, Jacob remains grateful for the support he has received. 'As much as I want to be angry, or want to hate people and be scared of people, it's just so hard to be when I have so many people showing their love for me,' he said on the fundraiser page. 'I'm not sad and I'm not angry, and the pain doesn't cause me grief because I know it's necessary to heal.'
Community Support
The GoFundMe campaign has raised over $102,000 of its $110,000 goal. Funds will cover medical expenses, lost income during recovery, and daily living costs. Jacob expressed his gratitude, urging others to 'stay loving and kind.'
Police have not yet disclosed a motive for the attack. The investigation is ongoing.
