WSIB Stresses Student Safety for Summer Jobs in Ontario

The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) is emphasizing the importance of workplace safety for students taking on summer jobs across Ontario. With thousands of young workers entering the workforce during the summer months, the WSIB is urging both employers and students to prioritize safety to prevent injuries.

Risks for Young Workers

Young workers, particularly those aged 15 to 24, are at a higher risk of workplace injuries due to inexperience and lack of training. According to the WSIB, in 2023 alone, there were over 4,000 lost-time injury claims from workers in this age group in Ontario. Common hazards include slips, trips, falls, and incidents involving machinery or equipment.

Wanda Trottier, North Bay’s director of human resources, said the city’s job is to ensure all students are safe when on the job. “We have a responsibility to provide a safe work environment and proper training,” Trottier stated.

Employer Responsibilities

Employers are required to provide health and safety training, supervise young workers, and ensure they understand their rights under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. This includes the right to know about hazards, the right to participate in safety activities, and the right to refuse unsafe work.

The WSIB also reminds employers that they must report any workplace injuries and have a valid Workplace Safety and Insurance Act coverage. Failure to comply can result in penalties.

Tips for Students

Students are encouraged to ask questions about safety procedures, wear required protective equipment, and never perform tasks they haven’t been trained to do. The WSIB offers resources such as the “Healthy and Safe Ontario” guide for young workers.

“It’s important for students to speak up if they feel unsafe,” added Trottier. “No job is worth a serious injury.”
