Windsor police have charged five individuals with impaired driving over the weekend, according to a news release issued Monday. The charges stem from separate incidents that occurred between Friday and Sunday, underscoring the persistent issue of drunk driving in the region.
Details of the Charges
Police did not release the names of the accused but confirmed that all five were charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol. The incidents included traffic stops and responses to accidents. In one case, officers responded to a single-vehicle collision where the driver showed signs of intoxication.
“Impaired driving remains a serious concern on our roads,” said Sergeant Steve Betteridge of the Windsor Police Service. “We urge everyone to plan ahead and never drive after consuming alcohol or drugs.”
Ongoing Enforcement Efforts
The charges come as part of the Windsor Police Service’s continued enforcement of impaired driving laws. Over the past year, the service has conducted numerous RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) checks and public awareness campaigns.
According to police, the five individuals will appear in court at a later date to face the charges. Penalties for impaired driving in Ontario can include license suspensions, fines, and even jail time for repeat offenders.
Community Impact
Local advocacy groups have praised the police for their vigilance. “Every impaired driving charge represents a potential life saved,” said a spokesperson for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Windsor. “We thank the police for their dedication to keeping our roads safe.”
The Windsor Police Service reminds the public that if they suspect someone is driving impaired, they should call 911 immediately. “Your call could prevent a tragedy,” Betteridge added.
