Ottawa Public Health has launched a new online tool designed to make sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing easier and more accessible for residents. The digital platform allows individuals to order self-test kits, receive results, and access sexual health resources from the privacy of their homes.
How the online tool works
The tool enables users to request STI self-test kits online, which are then mailed to their homes. After collecting samples, users can send them back to the laboratory for analysis and receive results through a secure online portal. This eliminates the need for in-person clinic visits for initial testing, reducing barriers such as stigma, transportation, and scheduling conflicts.
According to Ottawa Public Health, the initiative aims to increase testing rates and early detection of STIs, which are critical for preventing further transmission and complications. The tool covers common STIs including chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV.
Impact on public health
Dr. Sean Rourke, a Toronto-based clinical neuropsychologist and scientist at St. Michael's Hospital, emphasized the importance of accessible testing. “Self-testing options empower individuals to take control of their sexual health without the fear of judgment or logistical hurdles,” he said. “This can lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment, ultimately reducing the spread of infections in the community.”
The launch comes amid rising STI rates in Ottawa and across Canada. Public health data indicates that chlamydia and gonorrhea cases have increased by 15% in the region over the past two years, highlighting the need for innovative approaches to sexual health services.
Ottawa Public Health encourages all sexually active individuals, especially those under 30, to use the tool regularly. The service is free and confidential, with results typically available within a week of sample submission.
