Peloton Recalls 45,000 Bike Seat Posts in Canada Over Injury Risk
Peloton recalls 45,000 bike seat posts in Canada

Fitness technology company Peloton has initiated a significant safety recall affecting nearly 45,000 exercise bike seat posts sold across Canada. The voluntary action, coordinated with Health Canada, comes in response to reports that the seat post assembly can break during use, creating a potential fall and injury hazard for riders.

Details of the Recall and Identified Hazard

The recall specifically targets the Original Series Bike+ models manufactured between December 2019 and July 2022. In total, approximately 833,000 bikes are affected in the United States, with the Canadian portion representing a significant segment of the North American market. The company confirmed it has received three reports of the seat post breaking from users in the U.S., which resulted in two reported injuries from falls. At this time, there have been no similar incident reports from Canadian consumers.

Health Canada is urging consumers to immediately stop using the recalled exercise bikes until a replacement seat post has been installed. The affected bikes, which were manufactured in Taiwan, measure about 4 feet long by 2 feet wide and feature adjustable seats and handlebars.

How to Identify an Affected Peloton Bike

Consumers are advised to check their equipment to see if it is part of the recall. The affected models can be identified by the PL02 model number on the product label. Additionally, the bike will have a serial number beginning with the letter "T", which is typically located inside the front fork, behind the front fork, or behind the flywheel.

Free Replacement and Safety Instructions

Peloton has stated that member safety is its top priority and is offering a free replacement seat post for all affected models. The company has assured customers that the new seat post can be self-installed.

"If you have a recalled unit, please stop using it immediately, and contact us for a free replacement seat post that can be self-installed," the company said in its official recall notice.

Under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, it is illegal to redistribute, resell, or even give away the recalled products within Canada. Owners of the affected Peloton Original Series Bike+ are strongly encouraged to act promptly to ensure their safety and comply with the recall.
