NBC host Sara Gore, known for her national "Open House" series that showcases stylish homes, announced on Thursday that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will be taking a leave of absence for treatment and surgery.
In an emotional and candid segment on her NBC 4 lifestyle program, "New York Live," Gore tearfully admitted, "If I didn't say that I was a little bit scared, I'd be lying." Despite having watched her mother and sister battle the disease, the 49-year-old revealed she was still caught off guard by her own diagnosis.
"I always knew I was high risk," she said. "And I always assumed this day would come. But let me tell you, you are never ready... even when you catch it early."
Describing the diagnosis as "an emotional blow," she added, "It is stinging right now."
Gore, who shares three children with her husband, Matthew Miele, said she is receiving "incredible" care from her medical team. "I feel loved," she said, fighting back tears.
"Maybe there is a gift in this even if I don't fully understand what it is yet," she remarked, noting that the experience serves as a reminder of "how precious life is."
Addressing her viewers, she promised, "I'm gonna come back better than ever, and I'm gonna see you on the other side of this."
