A California man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the brutal murder of his aunt, which stemmed from an argument over a clogged toilet. Christopher Kaulaity, 29, of Bakersfield, was convicted of first-degree murder in the December 2024 death of Maria Carmen Torrez, 45.
Details of the crime
According to court records reviewed by LawandCrime.com, Kaulaity compared the stabbing to carving 'Play-Doh figures.' The attack occurred after a family dispute about the single toilet in the residence being clogged. On the day of the murder, Torrez insulted Kaulaity as she passed him in the hallway on her way to the bathroom. In response, Kaulaity retrieved pepper spray and a knife from his bedroom, kicked open the bathroom door, pepper-sprayed his aunt to blind her, and stabbed her repeatedly in the back and neck.
Sentencing and reaction
Kern County Superior Court Judge Chad A. Louie imposed the maximum sentence, adding one year for a weapon enhancement, meaning Kaulaity must serve at least 26 years before parole eligibility. District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer described the murder as a 'tragic act against a woman who should have been safe inside her home.' Kaulaity showed no remorse during sentencing, shouting at the victim's sister, 'I hope you rot in hell with your sister, b—.' The sister responded, 'I hate you guys,' referring to Kaulaity and his supporters.
Defense and verdict
Kaulaity's defense argued that he suffered from severe mental health disorders, including hallucinations and a temporary blackout during the killing. However, a forensic psychologist testified that Kaulaity knew his actions were wrong, leading the jury to reject the insanity claim. Kaulaity had called 911 after the murder to report that he had killed his aunt.
Background
Kaulaity and Torrez lived in a multigenerational home with seven other adult family members. Tensions had been high, and family members had warned Kaulaity to resolve issues with his aunt or be forced to leave. Kaulaity described the killing as 'butcher style,' comparing himself to 'Norman Bates' and saying it reminded him of carving Play-Doh figures as a child.
