Students and staff at St. Mary's High School in Kitchener, Ontario, came together on May 28, 2026, to raise $60,000 for cancer research during the school's annual Relay for Life event. The 12-hour walkathon, held on the school grounds, saw participants taking turns walking around a track to show support for those affected by cancer.
Community Effort
The fundraiser was organized by the school's student council and involved more than 300 participants. Donations were collected from students, families, and local businesses. The funds will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society to support research and patient services.
Event coordinator and teacher Sarah Mitchell said the turnout exceeded expectations. "Our students showed incredible dedication, and the community really rallied behind this cause," she said. "Many participants walked for family members or friends who have battled cancer, making the event deeply personal."
Student Leadership
Grade 12 student Ava Middonti, who helped organize the event, said the experience was rewarding. "It's amazing to see everyone come together for such an important cause. We raised more than we ever have before," she said. The event also featured a luminary ceremony, where bags with candles were placed along the track in memory of loved ones.
The Relay for Life at St. Mary's has been an annual tradition for over a decade, with this year's total being the highest in the school's history. Organizers hope to continue the momentum next year and aim to raise even more for cancer research.
