Kids Curing Cancer Ends 13-Year Campaign Raising $262K

A simple act of kindness by a nine-year-old girl has culminated in a 13-year fundraising campaign that raised more than $262,000 for cancer-related causes in the Windsor-Essex region. Lauren Baillargeon, along with her siblings Ty and Kierstyn Baillargeon, have announced the conclusion of their Kids Curing Cancer (KCC) initiative.

From a $50 Donation to a Legacy

The journey began in 2014 when Lauren Baillargeon wanted to make a $50 donation to honor her grandfather, Dan Gerard, who was battling pancreatic cancer. What started as a small gesture quickly grew through word of mouth, evolving into a sustained community effort.

At the final fundraising event last month, Lauren expressed hope that their efforts would inspire other young people. "Our hope is that we have inspired young kids in the last 13 years to keep the Kids Curing Cancer momentum going," she said. "We hope we have shown kids across Windsor-Essex that all it takes is a little idea and some motivation, and the most amazing things can happen."

Community Support and Gratitude

The siblings emphasized that their success was not achieved alone. "KCC would not be what it is today without the support of the countless people and organizations who partnered with us," they stated. "We cannot emphasize enough that we have not done this alone. We are beyond grateful."

In the 2025-26 fundraising year alone, the family raised $48,452. Half of this amount was donated to the Windsor Cancer Centre, while the other half went to the Erie Shores Health Foundation.

Impact on Local Healthcare

Penny Bellhouse, CEO of Erie Shores Health Foundation, praised the initiative. "Kids Curing Cancer represents the very best of our community. Their dedication, compassion, and commitment to honouring their grandfather's legacy has created a ripple effect that continues to impact countless lives."

Since its inception, Kids Curing Cancer has made substantial contributions to various organizations, including:

  • More than $15,000 to the local Ronald McDonald House
  • More than $35,000 to the Fight Like Mason Foundation
  • More than $27,000 to the radiation department and patient assistance program through the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation
  • More than $135,000 to Erie Shores Hospice and other initiatives through the Erie Shores Health Foundation

The campaign's conclusion marks the end of an era, but its impact on the community and the legacy of compassion will endure.
