Christ Hospital Joins National Heart Study for Retired Athletes

The Christ Hospital Health Network has announced its participation in a significant nationwide research initiative focused on heart disease among former professional athletes. This groundbreaking study, known as the GAMEFILM Registry, aims to enhance early detection and prevention methods for cardiovascular conditions in retired players through advanced imaging technology and artificial intelligence-driven analysis.

Addressing a Critical Health Concern

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, presenting particular challenges for former professional athletes. The intense physical demands placed on athletes' cardiovascular systems during their careers can mask underlying issues, making early detection difficult. Statistics reveal that among former football players, approximately one in three die from cardiovascular disease, compared to one in five in the general population.

Advanced Technology for Better Detection

The study employs noninvasive coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) combined with Heartflow Plaque Analysis to provide clinicians with a comprehensive view of coronary artery disease. This technology assesses plaque buildup and characteristics within the arteries, helping identify higher-risk patients earlier and enabling more personalized, proactive care strategies.

"We are honored to be one of a select few hospital systems to help former athletes better detect signs of cardiovascular disease, with a goal of improving treatment options and outcomes for them," said Dean Kereiakes, MD, FACC, MSCAI, Chairman of The Christ Hospital Heart & Vascular Institute. "By participating in this nationwide study, The Christ Hospital Health Network is contributing to research that could shape future screening protocols, prevention strategies and personalized care for athletes today and generations to come."

Patient Perspective and Study Goals

One participant enrolled at The Christ Hospital is Brad Cousino, a former All-American defensive player at Miami University who went on to play for multiple NFL teams including the Cincinnati Bengals, New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Toronto Argonauts.

"So many former players, as they get older, develop health problems despite being in the best shape of their lives while playing professionally," Cousino explained. "After retirement, many fall into bad habits, whether it's poor diet or lack of exercise that their body has been used to. Being a part of this groundbreaking study at The Christ Hospital will provide answers and shape ways for future athletes to have better health outcomes after they play their final game."

National Scope and Research Objectives

The Christ Hospital is one of only 17 sites nationwide and the only healthcare system in Ohio participating in this important cardiovascular research. Nationally, the GAMEFILM Registry has already enrolled nearly 200 retired professional football, basketball, and hockey players, with plans to expand to approximately 300 participants.

The study aims to better understand the prevalence, risk factors, severity, and treatment strategies for cardiovascular disease in former professional athletes. By evaluating different types of plaque in coronary arteries—including those most likely to trigger cardiac events—researchers hope to develop more effective screening and prevention protocols for this unique population.

This research represents a significant step forward in addressing the specific cardiovascular health challenges faced by retired professional athletes, potentially leading to improved health outcomes and quality of life during their post-career years.
