Young Cancer Survivor's Dream Meeting with Fred Fox
A deeply moving encounter unfolded at Northridge Public School this week, as 13-year-old cancer survivor Emily Thompson met Fred Fox, the brother of Canadian icon Terry Fox. The visit, part of Fred Fox's ongoing efforts to continue his brother's legacy, left a profound impact on students and staff alike.
"I've Been Personally Impacted"
Emily Thompson, who battled and overcame leukemia two years ago, shared her emotional connection to Terry Fox's story. "When I was going through treatment, Terry's determination gave me strength," she explained, her voice trembling with emotion. "Meeting Fred today feels like coming full circle—from being inspired by Terry's courage to now seeing how his family continues to spread hope."
Fred Fox spent Tuesday morning speaking to students about his brother's Marathon of Hope and the importance of cancer research funding. "Terry never got to finish his run, but his dream lives on through every person who continues the fight against cancer," Fred told the assembled students. He emphasized how young people like Emily embody the resilience his brother championed.
Continuing a National Legacy
The visit comes as Canada prepares for another year of Terry Fox Runs across the country. Since Terry's original marathon in 1980, the foundation bearing his name has raised over $850 million for cancer research. Fred Fox has become a prominent ambassador, visiting schools and communities to keep his brother's message alive.
"What many people don't realize is how personal this remains for our family," Fred shared. "Every time I meet someone like Emily, I'm reminded why we continue this work. These young survivors are living proof that research makes a difference."
School Community United in Support
Northridge Public School has actively participated in Terry Fox Runs for decades, but Tuesday's visit marked a special milestone. Principal Sarah Johnson noted, "Having Fred here, and seeing Emily's reaction, has energized our entire school community. It's one thing to learn about Terry Fox in history class—it's another to meet someone who carries forward his mission."
The school plans to increase its fundraising efforts for this year's Terry Fox Run, with students already brainstorming creative ways to contribute. Emily has volunteered to help organize the school's event, wanting to give back to the cause that supported her during her treatment.
A Moment of Hope and Healing
As Fred Fox prepared to leave, he shared a final thought with the students: "Terry believed that anything is possible if you try. Emily's recovery shows that. Your generation has the power to continue making progress against cancer."
The emotional meeting served as a powerful reminder that Terry Fox's legacy extends far beyond his historic run—it lives in every survivor, every researcher, and every community that continues to believe in his dream of a world without cancer.
