Bret Hart Joins Forces with Prostate Cancer Centre for Annual Health Initiative
In a unique partnership aimed at combating prostate cancer, wrestling icon Bret Hart is teaming up with the Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre for a special men's health event scheduled for Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Sunridge Mall. This marks the seventh consecutive year that Hart has lent his star power to this vital cause, offering fans a compelling incentive to prioritize their health.
Free Screening with a Celebrity Reward
The event, running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., provides men aged 40 to 70 with complimentary PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood testing, a crucial tool for early detection of prostate cancer. Additionally, all men 18 years and older can receive free assessments for blood sugar, blood pressure, and waist circumference. Those who undergo the checkups will receive a ticket granting them priority access to meet Hart and obtain an autograph.
Laura Barker, communications supervisor at the centre, emphasized the importance of demystifying the testing process. "Many men feel fearful when they hear 'prostate cancer' and worry about invasive procedures," she explained. "We're spreading the message that it's a simple blood test with no invasiveness involved."
The Man Van: Mobile Clinic Making a Difference
The screenings will be conducted through the centre's mobile clinic, known as the Man Van, which is the only facility of its kind in Canada dedicated to providing free PSA testing. Barker noted that the process takes just 15 minutes and helps determine PSA levels. "If PSA is elevated, further testing for prostate cancer may be necessary," she added.
During the event, testing will occur inside the mall at a retail setup near the Bath & Body Works store on Level 1. Participants can register at a prominent tent staffed by centre personnel.
Dual Lines for Meeting Hart
After completing their checkups, visitors can join one of two lines to meet Bret Hart. The priority line is reserved for those who underwent testing, while a separate line is available for the general public, including individuals unable to get tested or women without a male companion participating. However, priority access remains exclusive to those who received screenings.
Hart's Personal Connection to the Cause
The importance of early detection is deeply personal for Hart, who, along with his brother, was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Hart's cancer was caught early, leading to successful treatment, but his older brother Smith was diagnosed at Stage 4 and passed away from the disease in 2017 at age 68.
"This experience fueled Hart's advocacy for early detection," Barker stated. "He witnessed firsthand how early detection saved his life, while his brother's late diagnosis had tragic consequences."
Growing Impact and Community Engagement
Thanks to Hart's involvement, the event has gained significant popularity over the years. In the previous year, the clinic tested 203 individuals during the event, a notable increase compared to the typical three-hour clinic that considers 35 tests a success. Barker highlighted the growing awareness, noting that men now actively inquire about the event months in advance and mark it on their calendars.
This initiative underscores the critical role of early screening in treating prostate cancer effectively and leverages celebrity influence to encourage men to take proactive steps toward their health.
