Bonnie Tyler, the iconic Welsh singer known for her hit "Total Eclipse of the Heart," is recovering in a Portuguese hospital after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery. The 74-year-old singer is being treated in Faro, where she owns a home.
Surgery Successful, Recovery Underway
According to a statement on Tyler's official website, "The surgery went well and she is now recuperating." The statement added, "We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery."
A Storied Career
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Wales, Tyler was discovered by talent scout Roger Bell in a Swansea club. She released her first single, "Lost in France," in 1977, but it was her 1983 smash "Total Eclipse of the Heart" that cemented her legacy. The ballad spent two weeks at No. 1 in the U.K. and four weeks atop the charts in the U.S. Her other hits include "It's a Heartache" and "Holding Out for a Hero."
Tyler told Good Morning America in April 2024 that the song, written and produced by the late Jim Steinman, sees a surge in popularity during celestial events. "Every time the eclipse comes, everyone all over the world, they play 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' and I never get tired of singing it," she said.
Accolades and Achievements
The Grammy-nominated singer became the first British female artist to debut at No. 1 on the U.K. albums chart and remains the only Welsh artist to land a No. 1 on the U.K. singles chart, according to People. Tyler represented the U.K. at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest and was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2023 for her services to music.
She has released 18 studio albums, with her most recent being 2021's The Best Is Yet to Come.
Upcoming Shows Uncertain
Tyler has performances scheduled for Malta and Germany later this month, along with a tour that includes stops in the U.K., Austria, Hungary, Turkey, and Romania. There has been no immediate word on whether these shows will proceed, although the dates remain listed on her website.
