Gayflor Maiwo experienced overwhelming emotions when he finally received the keys to his new apartment near downtown Edmonton. After spending fourteen months in recovery at the Hope Mission facility, this moment represented more than just housing—it symbolized the restoration of his independence and the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
A Descent into Darkness
Just over a year ago, Maiwo had reached what he describes as "rock bottom." He was struggling with severe alcohol addiction, consuming alcohol daily, and had lost his stable housing situation. Although he never lived on the streets, he found himself without a permanent home, relying on friends' couches for temporary shelter.
"I was close to becoming practically homeless," Maiwo recalled, reflecting on that difficult period. Originally from Liberia, he had come to Canada nearly nineteen years earlier with his then-future wife. He had built a life in Edmonton, becoming a father and establishing roots in the community.
The Turning Point
Everything changed dramatically in 2021 when Maiwo's marriage became unhealthy and he experienced a traumatic event that pushed him over the edge. He began questioning his decision to come to Canada and felt his life had lost purpose. To cope with these overwhelming feelings, he turned increasingly to alcohol.
The consequences were severe: Maiwo was arrested for driving under the influence, lost his driver's license, and could not return home. After agreeing to stay with a friend for two weeks, he faced the terrifying reality of having nowhere to go next.
The Path to Recovery
In November 2024, unsure where to turn, Maiwo began walking through Edmonton. During this walk, he felt compelled to make a phone call. Although he cannot remember exactly who he called, the woman who answered connected him with Hope Mission, setting in motion his journey toward recovery.
Maiwo was initially sent to Hope Mission's CarePoint facility before being placed in their Breakout recovery program, where he would spend the next fourteen months. This program, specifically designed for individuals struggling with addiction, provided the structure, housing, and support he desperately needed.
The Breakout Program's Impact
Adeolu Adeoye, director of emergency care and housing at Hope Mission, explained that the Breakout program offers participants stable living situations combined with comprehensive support services. "It takes a while to wean oneself from those type of habits," Adeoye noted. "To be in a stable living situation, getting support, getting help, getting training and classes on living addiction-free—it does make a world of difference."
For Maiwo, this was not his first attempt at recovery, but he found the change of environment crucial to his success. He approached the program with renewed determination, committing to behaviors that demonstrated his commitment to recovery. Where he had previously neglected personal hygiene during active addiction, he began showering twice daily and maintaining a clean living space.
Building a New Life
Today, Maiwo has emerged from the program with a job, his own apartment, and a reconnection with his faith. His story represents one of 838 successful housing placements achieved by Hope Mission housing teams in 2025. The organization's comprehensive approach to addressing both addiction and housing instability has proven transformative for individuals like Maiwo.
