Correctional Service Canada (CSC) announced the seizure of over $846,000 worth of contraband and unauthorized items at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert this week. The operation, conducted on Tuesday, was the result of staff vigilance and information provided by the public, according to a news release issued Thursday.
Items Seized and Investigation
The contraband included methamphetamine, tobacco, lighters, mobile phones, and accessories. CSC confirmed that police are continuing their investigation into the incident. The agency emphasized its commitment to preventing drugs from entering correctional facilities through various means, including ion scanners and drug-detector dogs used to search buildings, personal property, inmates, and visitors.
Preventive Measures and Partnerships
CSC works in close partnership with police to take action against individuals attempting to introduce contraband into institutions. The agency has also established a confidential telephone tip line for all federal institutions, allowing callers to report drug use or trafficking activities that may threaten safety and security. The toll-free number is 1-866-780-3784, and all tips remain anonymous and protected.
This seizure highlights the ongoing efforts to maintain security within correctional facilities and prevent the flow of illegal items that could endanger staff, inmates, and visitors. The Saskatchewan Penitentiary, located in Prince Albert, is a federal institution that houses male inmates.
